Los
Angeles Mondrian West Hollywood Hotel
Mondrian West
Hollywood Hotel ***
Mondrian Hotel Los Angeles: Trendy
nightclubs and restaurants surround this outwardly
unassuming resort in the heart of Sunset Strip.
It’s 1 mile from Beverly Hills,
and 3 miles from Hollywood. Inside,
it’s anything but unassuming.
Spacious guestrooms serve as
urban retreats with plush bedding, separate sitting
and dining areas, wet bars with glassware, minibars,
VCRs, multi-line phones, and high-speed Internet
connections.
Choices include the popular
and hip Asian-Cuban fusion restaurant, Skybar;
an in-lobby sushi and sake bar; a sundeck that
resembles a living room; a city-view swimming
pool; and a 24-hour gym.
:No
signs mark this discreet, 12-story property, but
guests who pull into the tree-shaded driveway
are greeted by a staff that is suited up like
the hotel’s well-heeled
guests. The ultra-bold, post-modern, eclectic
interior bedazzles newcomers with the stage-set
lobby and glowing glass walls with visual projections.

The Mondrian
was designed so that the indoor and outdoor spaces
blend seamlessly. Most of the spaces converge
on the swimming pool and sundeck area, where the
sophisticated Asia de Cuba restaurant opens onto
one side, and the Hollywood-hip Skybar is poised
at the other. Between the two is a terraced and
landscaped deck, which - come evening - is transformed
into an outdoor living room, with candlelight
and oversized futons for lounging.
This fascinating resort
is aglow with subtle optical illusions and special
lighting effects. Guests may find themselves watching
a hypnotic blue screen in one of the corridors,
waiting for a TV image or a fish to float by (take
a closer look!). A lobby wall may change color
each time a guest walks by. Even the guestrooms
have messages subtly embedded in the walls (hints:
“dream” near the bed; “together”
by the dining table).
